1 dead in shooting at Iowa mall; suspect in custody

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say one person was killed in a shooting that stunned shoppers at a popular Iowa mall.

Witnesses say they heard gunshots near the food court of the Coral Ridge Mall after 7 p.m. Friday. They say a gunman shot at least one female victim, then fled.

Iowa Department of Public Safety spokesman Alex Murphy confirmed that the victim died.

Authorities say a suspect was taken into custody. Authorities released no information on the suspect or the victim.

The mall is near Interstate 80 in Coralville, a community of 19,000 people in eastern Iowa. It’s the second-largest mall in Iowa.

The shooting prompted some shoppers and workers to rush out of the mall and others to remain on lockdown for more than an hour.
