South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg names James Mueller his new chief of staff

A new face will soon be coming to South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s staff.

Buttigieg named 32-year-old James Mueller his new chief of staff on Friday, June 26.

Mueller is a South Bend native who recently worked on public policy and energy at George Washington University’s Solar Institute in Washington D.C. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in South Bend in 2002 and the University of Notre Dame in 2004.

He holds degrees in mathematics, history and philosophy as well as a Ph.D. in ocean science and engineering.

The appointment comes after Buttigieg’s current chief of staff, Kathryn Roos, resigned so that she could pursue a master’s degree at Harvard University.
