'Blue Alert' system considered by Michigan lawmakers to issue message after attack on police officer

Michigan State Sen. John Proos is pushing for passage of a “Blue Alert” system that he says would protect the public and law enforcement after an attack on an officer.

The Blue Alert would be modeled after the Amber Alert and Silver Alert notification systems used to locate missing children and seniors, according to Republican State Senator John Proos, who co-sponsored the legislation.

A Blue Alert would quickly disseminate information about the suspect across radio, TV and other media in hopes the information given to the public would result in tips leading to the arrest of the suspect.

For the state to issue a Blue Alert, a law enforcement officer must have been killed or seriously injured, the offender must pose a serious risk or threat to the public and other officers and information about the offender’s vehicle must be available, according to Senate Bill 336, which was sponsored by Democratic Senator Tonya Schuitmaker.

The Michigan Senate approved the bill, which is now being considered by House lawmakers.
