Woman found stabbed when firefighters called to fire in Elkhart

A 50-year-old woman was found stabbed inside an apartment when firefighters were called to a fire in Elkhart Thursday night, July 23.

The Elkhart Fire Department was called at 10:07 p.m. to the 900 block of Prairie Street for an apartment fire and found Maria Torres and a 49-year-old man with stab wounds, according to a news release from the department.

Torreslater died, Sgt. Chris Snyder with the Elkhart Police Department said. The man was treated at Elkhart General Hospital for his non-life threatening injury.

A 16-year-old girl inside the home was uninjured.

The coroner was called to the scene at 10:42 p.m. 

Firefighters extinguished a small fire in the back bedroom of an apartment inside the building, according to the news release.

On Friday, July 24, The Elkhart County Coroner determined Torres died due to the stabbing. Her death was ruled a homicide.
