The debate over the Goshen Redskins mascot could be decided for good at the Goshen Community Schools school board meeting set for Monday night, July 27.

A vote on whether or not to retire Goshen High School’s moniker is listed as an action item on the school board’s agenda, according to 95.3 MNC’s news partners The Elkhart Truth.

Being listed as an action item means that a vote could very well happen, but it’s not guaranteed. School board members could also decide to table the vote, postpone it or taken another action.

The vote comes after the debate over the “Redskins” mascot resurfaced about a month ago by two community members who asked the board to consider changing the name, The Elkhart Truth reported.

Those two members and others who agree with them say the word “Redskin” is a racial slur and using that term as a mascot is offensive and derogatory.

However, those who support the mascot say they are proud to be Redskins and they believe that the word honors Native Americans.
