Indiana unemployment rate holds at 3.3% in July

Indiana’s unemployment rate remained well below the national rate in July, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The state’s unemployment rate was 3.3%, compared with the national rate of 4.1%.

Indiana’s labor force participation rate was 63.1%, higher than the national rate of 61.4%. The rate measures the percentage of Hoosiers age 16 and older who are working or actively looking for work.

Indiana’s total labor force stood at 3,489,469 people.

Total private-sector employment fell by 4,900 jobs from June to 2,843,900 in July.

Several industries reported job gains during the month. Construction added 1,700 jobs, while private educational and health services gained 1,200. Trade, transportation and utilities added another 600 jobs.

As of August 1, Indiana had 101,704 open job postings statewide.

The state recorded 18,092 continuing unemployment insurance claims for the week ending August 1.
