INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana is slated to get roughly $1 million in federal grants that will pay for humanities and arts projects around the state.

The money, awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, will fund efforts to digitize historical state newspapers and publish the works of philosopher George Santayana. A study of African Americans’ fight for Civil Rights will also be funded by the grants, among others.

The humanities organization says the grant program will provide over $36 million in funding for humanities and arts projects around the country. Much of the money is being funneled to projects at academic institutions.
