Buchanan Middle School classes to start Monday after copper stolen from school

BUCHANAN, Mich. (AP) — The start of classes has been delayed at a southwestern Michigan school that was stripped of copper components from its water and ventilation systems.

Officials with Buchanan Community Schools say repair work has taken place at Buchanan Middle School, where a break-in took place last month.

The first day of classes for the school had been set for Tuesday, the same day many students around the state started the new school year. But that was delayed because of the break-in. The district says classes now are expected to start at the middle school on Monday.

The school was under renovation at the time of the break-in.

Buchanan police have said the suspect or suspects may have injuries, possibly chemical burns, from cutting a high-pressure line.
