Suspect in death of 2-year-old Plymouth girl charged with aggravated battery, neglect of a dependent

Charges have been filed against a 23-year-old man suspected in the death of a 2-year-old girl in Plymouth.

Shane Weedling was charged with aggravated battery resulting in death, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and possession of marijuana with prior convictions in connection to the death of 2-year-old Serenity Wilson, according to WSBT.

Serenity died Saturday, Sept. 19, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne after her mother, 24-year-old Kristi Lavanway, took her to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth on Friday to be treated for serious head injuries.

She was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital and hospital staff called the police because the injuries were suspicious.

An autopsy performed Monday, Sept. 21, revealed that Serenity died after suffering multiple blunt force traumas to her head, WNDU reported. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Lavanway was arrested Monday and charged with neglect of a dependent causing death, WSBT reported.

Both Weedling and Lavanway are being held at the Marshall County Jail on $100,000 cash bond.
