Man at center of reported child abduction in South Bend arrested, girl is safe

6 p.m. UPDATE: A man at the center of the reported kidnapping of a 4-year-old girl in South Bend was arrested on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 24.

Anikah Smallwood was taken from her home in the 400 block of South Kentucky Street in South Bend, WNDU reported. Police say she was taken from her home without permission by Charles Jackson,61.

Officers were called to the home at about 1 p.m. An Amber Alert was requested.

Jackson is the ex-boyfriend of the girl’s grandmother, who also lives in the home, according to WSBT.

Jackson was placed into custody on S. Kentucky Street around 5:30 p.m.

After Jackson was arrested, Anikah was taken to an ambulance to make sure she wasn’t harmed, WNDU reported.

Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to call 911 or the South Bend Police Department at 574-235-9361.

 

ORIGINAL STORY: Police are searching for a 61-year-old man who they say took a 4-year-old girl from her South Bend home Thursday afternoon, Sept. 24.

Anikah Smallwood was taken from her home in the 400 block of South Kentucky Street in South Bend, WNDU reported. She’s 4 feet tall, weighs about 50 pounds and was last seen wearing a purple shirt and black and pink shorts. She has braided hair with multi-colored bows.

Police say she was taken from her home without permission by Charles Jackson.

Jackson is described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 280 pounds with grey and black hair. He was last seen wearing a grey t-shirt and grey sweatpants driving a grey 2013 Chrysler 300 with Indiana license plate D955SX.

Officers were called to the home at about 1 p.m. An Amber Alert has been requested.

Anyone who sees Jackson or Anikah or anyone matching their descriptions should call 911 or South Bend Police Department at 574-235-9361.
