LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Legislation going to Gov. Rick Snyder’s desk would create a statewide alert system aimed at catching suspected police killers who are on the loose.

The Blue Alert system would function like Amber Alerts designed to find missing children. Radio and TV stations would broadcast information regarding offenders suspected of killing or seriously injuring law enforcement officers.

The Senate voted 37-0 Wednesday for the bill.

About half of the states have Blue Alert systems. They use media broadcasts and highway signs to quickly tell the public an offender’s identity and, if possible, his or her vehicle information.

Blue Alerts would be issued only when the offender is at large and believed to be a public safety threat.
