The South Shore Line may not shut down at the end of the year under a proposed extension of a deadline for installing an automated train navigation system called Positive Train Control (PTC).

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee agreed to extend the PTC deadline — which now is Jan. 1, 2016 — to the end of 2018 at the earliest as part of a highway bill called the Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2015, The Hill reported.

The STRR Act will be considered by the U.S. House this week.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, which runs the South Shore, said it would shut down service at the end of the year if the PTC deadline is not met. Other train systems, including Amtrak and Metra in Chicago, have also said that they would shut down service at the end of the year.
