The 16-year-old boy accused of bringing a gun to Eau Claire High School after posting a threatening message on Snapchat has been expelled from school.

The Eau Claire School Board voted unanimously to expel the boy during its meeting Monday night, Oct. 26, according to WNDU.

The boy is being held at the juvenile detention center in Berrien County while he awaits his first court appearance, set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. The judge at the hearing may decide whether or not to waive the boy into adult court or to allow him to be charged in juvenile court.

He faces charges of larceny of a firearm, larceny in a building and malicious destruction of a building.

Police say he published a Snapchat message on Sunday, Oct. 18, that included a photo of a handgun and a message threatening students to avoid school on Monday.

Officials were notified that a student may have had a gun in his car on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Police were called and a search resulted in the discovery of a handgun in the student’s car. He was immediately suspended and taken into police custody.

Police released the boy from custody but then arrested him Friday morning, Oct. 23.

Though parents weren’t immediately notified, Eau Claire Public Schools Superintendent David Gray said that teachers and staff were given a photo of the student and told to call for a lockdown if they saw him at school. Gray also said that doors were locked.

Parents complained at the school board meeting that they weren’t notified about the discovery of the gun until Friday.

“The Honeywell system worked fine on Friday at 5 o’clock when I received that call. Why couldn’t I receive that call on Tuesday?” Jesse Edwards asked the school board, according to WNDU.
