Teenager struck by bullet that traveled through wall in accidental shooting in Dowagiac

Police in Dowagiac are investigating after a 15-year-old was struck by a bullet that traveled through a wall.

Police were called to Benny’s Barber Shop in the 100 block of South Front Street around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Officers were advised that a 36-year-old man was showing a handgun to someone in the barber shop and while showing the gun, he accidentally fired it toward a wall. The bullet traveled through the wall and went into Saylor’s Pizza which is next door to the barber shop, according to a news release from Dowagiac Police.

After going through the wall the bullet struck a 15-year-old Saylor’s employee in the ankle. The teenager did not need medical attention, the news reelase states.

Officers made contact with the subject who owns the gun and spoke with other witnesses to the incident. The subject was cooperative with Dowagiac Police and turned the gun over to police.

Dowagiac Police determined that the firing of the gun was accidental, however the incident will be turned over to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if any charges should be filed.
