Indiana man killed after attempting to rob Illinois men in car purchase

GARY, Ind. (AP) — Police say a northern Indiana man was killed and his girlfriend was injured in a shooting after the couple tried to rob two Illinois men who met them in Gary to buy a vehicle.

The would-be buyers called police around 7 p.m. Sunday to report a shooting on Gary’s west side. They told officers that they made arrangements over the Internet to meet the couple and buy the vehicle.

Authorities say one of the buyers took out his own gun and fired at the couple after 22-year-old Brandon Johnson of Gary pulled a gun on the men.

Johnson was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene. His girlfriend, a 21-year-old Gary woman, was shot in the thigh and treated at a hospital.

Charges are pending against the woman.
