Gale warning issued for Lake Michigan with high winds, waves

The National Weather Service has issued a gale warning for Lake Michigan, calling for high winds and waves that could create dangerous conditions.

The warning is effective through Thursday morning. Wind gusts of at least 50 mph and waves exceeding 15 feet are expected.

The U.S. Coast Guard urges caution for anybody on or near the water.

The severe weather risk comes after record-breaking warmth, with temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

Indiana Michigan Power crews worked to restore electricity for about 1,900 customers left in the dark following Wednesday’s storms and high winds that followed into Christmas eve morning.

Most of the outages were reported in St. Joseph County in Indiana and Berrien County in Michigan.

In Canton, the Department of Public Safety said Wednesday night that high winds had damaged vehicles and several structures. There were no reported injuries. The Weather Service was to survey the damage Thursday.
