93-year-old woman fatally injured in hit-and-run crash

PORTAGE, Ind. (AP) — Authorities in northwestern Indiana say a 93-year-old woman was fatally injured in a hit-and-run after her car crashed.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office says Evelyn Mayden of Portage died late Tuesday at a suburban Chicago hospital.

Portage police say Mayden was trying to cross a street Tuesday evening after her car became stuck on a concrete barrier. The (Munster) Times reports a witness told police that Mayden was nearing the sidewalk when she was possibly hit by the mirror of a large, dark-colored SUV that didn’t stop.

Police say Mayden had a large cut on her head and was speaking before being taken to a Gary hospital and then flown by helicopter to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois.
