SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a 17-year-old who walked away from a residential treatment facility for children and adolescents in south central Michigan has died after being struck by a minivan on a freeway.

The Battle Creek Enquirer and Jackson Citizen Patriot report the teenager was hit early Friday on Interstate 94 in Calhoun County’s Sheridan Township. He had been walking west on the eastbound side of the roadway. The minivan driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Sheriff’s department Sgt. Brent Lincoln says the teen from Flint had been missing from Starr Commonwealth’s Albion campus for about 20 minutes.

Investigators don’t think speed or alcohol contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.
