INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indianapolis high school boys basketball coach has been removed based on an Indiana High School Athletic Association investigation on two players’ transfers.

Crispus Attucks coach Phil Washington was given the news Friday by district officials. He’s been re-assigned to another school as an English teacher.

Washington tells The Indianapolis Star he’s pursuing legal channels to fight for his job.

Washington was named last year’s City Coach of the Year.

Indianapolis Public Schools suspended him in December for “improper behavior as an athletic coach.” District officials said Friday he was removed pending an internal investigation stemming from one by IHSAA.

An IHSAA committee upheld athletic ineligibility for two Crispus students. Officials ruled they were transferred for athletic reasons and Washington violated rules by having them play the summer before enrollment.
