Michigan officials help train inspectors about card skimmers

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan officials are part of an effort to train inspectors from across the country about credit card skimmer devices that are illegally placed on gas pumps.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is working with the U.S. Secret Service, the FBI and others on the effort. Training is taking place Wednesday as part of the National Conference on Weights and Measures in San Diego.

Michigan officials say they found a skimmer Tuesday in the Detroit suburb of Livonia. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, working with local and state police, has helped remove about 30 skimmers from Michigan pumps since August.

A skimmer is a device placed inside the credit card reader that captures credit and debit card information as the card is being swiped for payment.
