'Whites Only,' 'Colored Only' signs posted at Riley High School water fountains by students

Three students will be disciplined after South Bend school officials say they posted “Whites Only” and “Colored Only” signs above several water fountains at Riley High School on Thursday, Feb. 11.

Officials believe the students — one from Riley, one from Clay High School and one from Adams High School — posted the signs after attending a morning class at Riley, Fox 28 reported. The signs were not approved by the school.

“I was extremely disappointed to learn of the actions of these students today. There is no place for these kinds of actions in our schools or in our community,” Carole Schmidt, superintendent of South Bend Community School Corporation, said in a statement. “There will be discussions with the students at Riley about the seriousness of these signs and how detrimental they are to the culturally responsive environment we are attempting to create in all our schools.”

The student who told Fox 28 that he put the signs up said he was suspended for five days and could be expelled.

Find out why the student said he put the signs up in the full story from Fox 28.
