LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Eleven Michigan communities experiencing financial struggles are getting a share of a $5.4 million grant program that can help fund special projects.

The Michigan Department of Treasury recently announced communities getting funds from the Financially Distressed Cities, Villages, and Townships grant program.

Gov. Rick Snyder says in a statement the money “will go a long way to ensure these cities can improve the public services their residents expect and deserve.”

Communities getting money include Allen Park, Benton Harbor, Ecorse, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, River Rouge and Wayne.

The funding includes $2 million for Flint that was previously announced.

Cities, villages and townships experiencing at least one condition of “probable financial distress” as outlined by state law were eligible to apply.
