Former northwest Indiana firefighter union official admits to misusing funds

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — The former treasurer for a firefighters union in Gary has reached a plea deal in which he admits to using union funds for personal expenses, including his child’s private school tuition.

The Times of northwest Indiana reports that John T. Springer will plead guilty to three counts of wire fraud as part of the agreement entered this past week. His plea hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Springer was secretary-treasurer of the Gary Professional Firefighters Association Local 359 from 2007 until 2012.

In the plea agreement, Springer admits to using more than $30,000 in union money for personal expenses.

According to the federal indictment, he spent the money on his child’s school tuition, legal fees related to his divorce, bus tickets, a mortgage payment and medical expenses.
