Man found dead inside car after shooting, collision into apartment building, search for suspect underway

UPDATE: A search is underway for Nelson Cotton, 21, in connection to the shooting and collision at Indian Springs Apartments and Townhomes early Sunday morning. He is described as black, 21-years-old, 5’11”, 195 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, according to St. Joseph County Metro Homicide.

ORIGINAL STORY: A man whose vehicle crashed into an apartment building was found shot inside the vehicle. It happened on Sunday, April 10 at Indian Springs Apartments and Townhomes on the northwest side of South Bend.

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide investigators were called to the apartment complex around 1 a.m. where they found the vehicle in the building and a man, dead, inside the vehicle, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.

Family members living in the apartment struck by the car were not hurt.

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit Commander Tim Corbett tells WNDU that it appears there was a confrontation prior to the shooting and crash.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

A fire broke out in the same apartment complex around 4 a.m. Most of the damage from the blaze was contained to a corner of the building, ABC 57 reported.

There were no injuries associated with the fire.

It is not yet known whether the fire is connected with the collision and shooting.
