LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan will have tougher laws related to making methamphetamine under legislation Gov. Rick Snyder has signed.

Snyder signed bills on Wednesday that make new penalties for those trying to get someone to buy a behind-the-counter drug called pseudoephedrine. The decongestant can be used to make meth.

He also signed off on tougher penalties for those making the drug near schools or libraries and another bill to make it harder to get pseudoephedrine for those already convicted of trying to solicit someone to buy it.

Snyder says the bills will cut meth production and are “essential to protecting the lives and future of our children and the safety of Michigan families.”
