A 45-year-old New York man is in critical condition at a Fort Wayne hospital after police say he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle in Kosciusko County on Sunday night, June 5.

The crash happened just after 10 p.m. on S.R. 19 near C.R. 600 South near Mentone, Sgt. Chad Hill with the Kosicusko County Sheriff’s Department said. The New York man was airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center.

The driver of the car told police he was driving north on S.R. 19 and he didn’t see the bicyclist until right before the collision, Hill said.

Investigators found that the front light on the bicycle was was working, but the rear light wasn’t on and the rear reflectors were blocked by items attached to the bike’s frame.

The crash remains under investigation.
