MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) — A former Michigan City police dog has been buried in the same cemetery grave as his former handler.

The (Michigan City) News-Dispatch reports the cremated remains of Henry were buried on Friday at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Michigan City at the grave site of former Michigan City Police Officer Rob Grant, who passed away last year. Henry passed away about a month later and Grant’s family had been holding on to the cremated remains of the 13-year-old dog, hoping to one day bury him with Grant.

A bill signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence allows for the burial of the cremated remains of law enforcement or service animals on the grave of an owner or handler. Friday was the first day the new law went into effect.
