Woman critically injured in moped vs tractor-trailer collision in Kosciusko County

A 61-year-old Huntington woman was seriously injured when the moped she was riding on collided with a tractor-trailer.

The crash happened near Atwood just before 9 p.m. on Friday, July 8, according to a news release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.

Koscisuko County Sheriff’s deputies and medics were called to the area of Old Road 30 near County Road 520 West.

On arrival, they found the moped’s driver and passenger with multiple injuries.

The 31-year-old moped driver said he was struck from behind by the rig, which made him go off the road, the news release stated.

His passenger was ejected and suffered severe head injuries. She was taken by air-ambulance to Memorial Hospital in South Bend in critical condition. The driver of the moped also suffered head injuries and was taken to Parkview Hospital in Warsaw for treatment, the news release stated.

The 61-year-old Rochester man who was driving the tractor-trailer said he did not see the moped that was in front of him. Investigators believe the sunset obscured his visibility, the news release stated.

He was not injured.

The investigation into the crash is still underway.
