BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Hundreds of law enforcement officers are expected to attend the funeral for a bailiff who was killed when an inmate tried to escape from a southwestern Michigan courthouse.
The funeral for 63-year-old Ronald Kienzle of Benton Harbor is scheduled for Monday at the Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College. About 1,500 law enforcement officers attended the funeral for 61-year-old Joseph Zangaro on Friday.
Kienzle and Zangaro were killed July 11 in Berrien County Circuit Court in St. Joseph Larry when Darnell Gordon disarmed Deputy James Atterberry Jr. during a fight and shot him. Gordon was shot and killed. Both Kienzle and Zangaro were retired police officers.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department has released the following information about road closures that will be in effect on Monday, July 18, due to the funeral for Ronald Kienzle, who was shot and killed in the line of duty at the Berrien County Courthouse last Monday afternoon.
The following roads will be closed or restricted at various times for the funeral and grave site services:
Yore Avenue between Empire Avenue and Napier Avenue will be closed to all traffic between 9:00 am and approximately 4:00 pm for the parking of vehicles for the funeral service.
Crystal Avenue between Empire Avenue and Napier Avenue will be closed to through traffic between 2:00 pm and approximately 4:00 pm so law enforcement vehicles will be able to exit the cemetery and any vehicles parked along Crystal to leave. Only residential and business traffic on Crystal will be allowed.
The outside westbound lane of Napier Avenue will be closed between Yore Avenue and Pipestone Road starting at 1:30 pm until approximately 4:00 pm. This will leave the inside westbound lane open for traffic and does not affect the two eastbound or center turn lanes.
The I-94 exit ramps to Napier Avenue, exit 30, will be closed starting at 1:30 pm until approximately 4:00 pm. Westbound motorists wanting to exit onto Napier Avenue are asked to exit at the Business Loop 94 (Main Street) exit, exit 33. Eastbound motorists wanting to exit onto Napier Avenue are asked to exit at the Pipestone Road exit, exit 29.
Drivers travelling on northbound US-31 bypass going to eastbound I-94 are being asked to exit at the Sodus Parkway exit, exit 24, to enter eastbound I-94 at Pipestone Road.
