EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A campus-wide ban on all tobacco products goes into effect at Michigan State University next month.

The ban includes all tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewable tobacco, vaporizers, E-cigarettes and hookahs. The Lansing State Journal reports the ban that goes into effect Aug. 15 prohibits tobacco use in buildings, on the lawns and sidewalks, even in personal vehicles.

University officials say the ban is a matter of public health.

For Michigan State student smokers, punishments could range from a written warning to a suspension. Complaints against employees would go through human resources.

Michigan State spokesman Jason Cody says university officials are aware that when the ban goes into effect it won’t be like flipping a light switch. He says it’s part of a process of becoming a healthier place.
