INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A woman is suing Indianapolis police after a department police dog injured her while the animal was chasing a suspect last year.

Mara Mancini was pregnant during the July 2015 incident. She filed the lawsuit last week in federal court, claiming she had surgeries for injuries to her arm and thigh and took pain medication that left her son addicted to narcotics. Mancini’s attorney said the lawsuit was filed in federal court because Indiana law exempts dogs from liability if a government agency owns the animal and it is performing official duties.

Police declined comment on the lawsuit. The Indianapolis Star reports police said after the attack that Mancini ran out of her home before the dog bit her. Police said no training can prepare dogs for the unexpected.
