Four children were hospitalized after they nearly drowned in Lake Michigan off of the Washington Park beach in Michigan City on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 6.

Three boys visiting the beach with a church group from Chicago were swimming in the lake when they went under water at about 4:30 p.m., according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Several people tried to rescue them, including a 14-year-old Illinois girl who was pulled underwater by one of the boys.

The three boys and the girl were pulled from the water and taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City. One of the boys was eventually airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

The girl and the other two boys were released from St. Anthony’s.
