Nine people were arrested and and 43 warnings were issued during the “Railroad Trespass Abatement Program” this took place on Wednesday, Aug. 10.
The purpose of the blitz was to enforce trespassing laws on railroad property and educate the public of the dangers of walking along railroad tracks, according to Sgt. Chris Snyder with the Elkhart Police Department.
Elkhart Police partnered with Norfolk Southern Railroad to conduct the safety patrol.
Most of those who were stopped were not aware they were trespassing, Snyder stated.
Four individuals were arrested for trespassing, all of which had previously been issued a warning for trespassing on railroad property. Five individuals were arrested for warrants, according to Snyder.
Authorities hope the actions taken during the program will help reduce the number of injuries and fatalities which occur as a result of trespassing on railroad property, Snyder stated.
