A student who attends Riley High School in South Bend was arrested after a loaded handgun was found in their backpack, according to a letter from the South Bend Community Schools Corporation that was sent home to Riley parents.

Some students notified school officials and South Bend Police on Wednesday, Aug. 24, that the student was possibly armed while walking home on Tuesday, the letter stated.

School officials questioned the student on Wednesday morning.

The student ran from the school when the backpack was being searched.

Police arrested the student soon afterward.

School officials say there was a loaded gun in the student’s backpack. The student, who had just transferred into the district, faces disciplinary action.

At no time were students or staff in danger, according to the letter:

“It is important to note that all school personnel took this matter very seriously and acted in a swift manner. The students are to be commended for reporting the concerning behavior to school personnel. At no time today were students or staff in danger. Student safety is of the utmost importance to use. Please continue to talk with your students about school safety, the danger of weapons in school, and the importance of sharing any information with school personnel.”
