Purvi Patel to be released from prison

Purvi Patel (St. Joseph County Jail)

The Granger woman who disposed of her infant in the dumpster behind the former Moe’s Southwest Grill restaurant on University Drive in Granger in July of 2013 will be released from prison soon.

A St. Joseph County judge re-sentenced Purvi Patel to 18 months in prison, which is more time than the 1050 days she has served, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.

Patel will not be subject to parole, according to court documents, as reported by ABC 57.

Patel was convicted with feticide and neglect of a dependent after her infant’s body was found in a dumpster in July 2013. At trial, the prosecution said Patel purchased drugs over the internet to cause an abortion. The prosecution argued the baby was born alive, though the defense argued it was stillborn.

Patel was convicted last year and sentenced to 20 years in prison, but Patel appealed.

Last month, the court overturned Patel’s feticide conviction and vacated her child neglect conviction — ruling she should be re-sentenced on a lower-level child neglect charge.
