This week is National Blood Donation Week, but Governor Mike Pence is going one step further.

In addition to echoing the National Blood Donation Week proclamation, he’s also proclaimed Saturday, September 10th “Blood Donation Day” in Indiana, according to our reporting partners at ABC 57.

This is the first time a national blood donation week has been declared. Dr. Daliah Wachs with the American Red Cross started the initiative earlier this summer and asked governors to declare the service week in their state. It’s an attempt to get communities aware of the constant need for blood supply.

“The period from Memorial Day to Labor Day is the period we see the need for blood going out to trauma patients,” said Rodney Wilson, External Communications Manager at the American Red Cross.
