Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department accused of racial profiling against Latinos

There’s been an increase in arrests of undocumented immigrants in Elkhart County lately, and that’s causing some backlash from an activist group.

The National Immigrant Justice Center in Goshen feels the department is singling out Latinos and feeding racial stereotypes, according to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth.

It feels deputies are stoking “fear in the community” by making Facebook posts asking for tips on potential undocumented immigrants. The types of tips officers are getting “is constitutionally dubious”, according to Lisa Koop, immigration attorney with the National Immigrant Justice Center.

Sheriff Brad Rogers says undocumented immigrant arrests aren’t anything new for the department. He says he’s just enforcing state law and protecting people who have their identities stolen, according to the Elkhart Truth.

In the month of September, the sheriff’s department has arrested 10 suspects on charges of identity deception, forgery, counterfeiting, and similar charges. That includes four recently arrested based on tips from the public.

My husband and I fully support you officers. We are sick of the illegals and are using our freedom of speech to our advantage. They need to leave!
