Charges filed in South Bend drive-by shooting case

Charges have been filed against a man accused of shooting a woman who was playing with her children inside a South Bend home.

Darren Nicholas Mallett, 26, is charged with battery by means of a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness from the Oct. 10 shooting, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

The victim told police she was playing with her kids when she heard several gunshots. A bullet hit her in the side, according to the probable cause affidavit.

She was treated and released.

Witnesses told police they saw a blue Chevy Trailblazer driving slowly along an alley behind the house. They were then shot at by the people in the vehicle, according to police.

Mallett allegedly was the driver of the vehicle.
