It took a decade to break the ground in Niles.

Now, officials are celebrating the dawn of construction on Indeck Energy Services‘ new natural gas and energy center, according to ABC 57.

“We actually purchased this land several years ago and we tried to develop a project on this site in the early 2000’s, but the economics of the plant didn’t work at that time,” Michael DuBois, Indeck’s Vice President of Project Development, told ABC 57.

The $1 billion natural gas and energy center will go into the Niles Industrial Park. As a result, it will be outside of the city center. Company officials chose the site for the pipelines that run along the area. Also, its location relative to the rest of the Midwest is good.

Construction begins in the summer of 2017, with opening set for 2020.
