Elkhart police identify shooter in apartment shooting

(Ben Quiggle/Elkhart Truth)

Elkhart police have made an arrest and have a person of interest in mind following Wednesday night’s shooting.

35-year-old Leon Lewis is charged with domestic battery and criminal recklessness with a firearm. He’s in custody at Elkhart County Correctional Facility without bond. However, he’s not the man that shot the victim, but rather fired his gun inside an apartment before then, according to police.

Lewis was at an apartment on Burr Oak Lane Tuesday night as part of a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. Lewis is accused of grabbing her hair and hitting her in the face.

The next day, Lewis and a relative returned to the apartment. This led to an altercation and Lewis firing a gun inside the apartment. More shots were fired when the fight spilled outside. After Lewis got into a car and started driving off, a bullet hit his relative, who was sitting in the passenger’s seat. Lewis dropped off his relative at Elkhart General Hospital.

A person of interest has been identified in the shooting of Lewis’ relative. The identity is not being released at this time.

The case remains under investigation. Anybody with information is asked to contact the Elkhart Police Department at 574-297-7070 or the Tip Line at 574-389-4777.
