KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Kalamazoo police say they have made an arrest in Thursday night’s shooting of a Western Michigan University student at an off-campus apartment. Police would not identify the suspect but said the victim was 19-year-old Jacob Ryan Jones. Police are still seeking a second person.

Before the arrest was announced, Western Michigan University Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard said a current student-athlete had been suspended after being identified by Kalamazoo police as a person of interest in the fatal shooting.

Beauregard issued a statement Friday saying the university and the athletic department were cooperating with police in their investigation into the shooting. She didn’t identify the student-athlete or the sport the student participates in.

University President John Dunn issued a statement saying the university community “is stunned by the realization that a promising life has been lost.”
