Christmas tree disposal programs in South Bend, Mishawaka, and Elkhart now available

South Bend, Mishawaka, and Elkhart officials want to make sure you get rid of your Christmas trees before they dry up and become fire hazards.

Christmas tree disposal programs for all three cities have begun.

Tree recycling began Tuesday morning in South Bend. Your tree can be picked up by submitting a form online or by calling 311. Christmas trees free of ornaments, lights, and trimmings will be picked up through Jan. 30. you can also drop off your unwanted tree at the Organic Resources center, located between Nimtz and Old Cleveland Roads. The trees will be recycled into mulch, which will be available for free to South Bend residents.

In Mishawaka, Christmas trees can be set out at the curb on normal trash pickup days between now and the last week of January.

And Elkhart is offering four locations where you can drop off your unwanted Christmas tree:

  • West Side Middle School (Parking lot on Nappanee St.)
  • North Side Middle School (Parking lot near the track on Bristol St.) 
  • Riverview Park Softball Complex (Parking lot on Riverview Ave. behind Riverview Elementary School) 
  • Pierre Moran Pool (Parking lot on Lusher Ave. behind Pierre Moran School)

If you can’t haul your tree to one of those locations, you can set your tree on the curb starting Tues., Jan. 3. It will be picked up during regular trash collection days, provided they’re removed of ornaments, lights and trimmings. Trees will be picked up or can be dropped off until Tues., Jan. 17.
