Mishawaka officers buying body cams with own money

(Sarah Welliver/The Elkhart Truth)

Several police officers in Mishawaka are buying their own body cameras. Many more are considering doing the same, as well.

Patrolman Brian Long says that having a body camera offers him both peace of mind and an affirmation that he’s doing his job well, he told the South Bend Tribune.

He spent $300 on his own camera, and was one of the first in the department to do so.

A new policy went into effect last week at the Mishawaka PD allowing officers to wear the body cameras if they buy them themselves. This came after a year of discussion about how the recordings from the cameras would be stored and handled.

Footage from the cameras has already helped resolve criminal cases, and no negative feedback has been received.
