Republicans withdraw American Health Care Act bill, Donnelly, Young react

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican leaders have abruptly pulled their troubled health care overhaul bill off the House floor, short of votes and eager to avoid a humiliating defeat for President Donald Trump and GOP leaders.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., withdrew the legislation after Trump called him and asked him to halt debate without a vote, according to Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong. Just a day earlier, Trump had demanded a House vote and said if the measure lost, he would move on to other issues.

Democratic U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly released the following statement:

“I have been saying for years that we can work together to strengthen the Affordable Care Act and provide even better health care for Hoosiers. I continue to stand ready to work with anyone, Republican or Democrat, to do so.”

Republican U.S. 3rd District Congressman Jim Banks released the following statement:

“I remain committed to repealing Obamacare and replacing it with conservative reforms that will increase competition, lower costs and create more choices. I am hopeful that House Republicans can come together to end Obamacare’s burdensome taxes and regulations and pass free-market reforms that will benefit all Americans. I also will continue pushing for a permanent repeal of the medical device tax, a vital priority for northeast Indiana.”

“I have been saying for years that we can work together to strengthen the Affordable Care Act and provide even better health care for Hoosiers. (Interpretation: “I will take your money, determine if , when where and how much health care you will get and how much you will pay me for it”.) I continue to stand ready to work with anyone, (interpretation: when it serves Donnelly’s best interest) Republican or Democrat, to do so.” (Interpretation: party doesn’t matter to Donnelly. Only what best serves his agenda that moment in time. No loyalty or allegiance to anything or any one.
