Indiana Senate panel advances ISTEP replacement bill

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – An Indiana Senate education committee has advanced a bill setting parameters for a new state test that will replace the ISTEP exam.

The measure approved Wednesday on a 7 to 4 vote now goes to the full Senate. The bill by Rep. Bob Behning mandates that a new test, to be called ILEARN, be in place by 2019. But critics note the state has not yet picked a test. And they worry that the tight timeline and uncertainty could lead to the same circumstances that prompted lawmakers to ditch the ISTEP.

The ISTEP became politically charged issue after Republicans undertook a number of education overhauls in recent years.

Indiana students performed poorly on one recent version of the test that was not only more difficult, but also plagued by administrative glitches.

Idiots are in charge March 30, 2017 at 1:34 pm

Does anyone really believe that ANY government politician should have anything at all to do with educating our children? If you do your as stupid as they are! These people can’t regulate themselves so how in the world can we expect them to do anything intelligent with our children and their education? I am 52 years old and amazed that my children somehow grew up with a top notch education. Not really, They went to parochial school, had parents that were involved and cared and did not rely on idiot politicians to determine what was best…

Ditto, homeschool, son tested in the top 1% of the state in SAT. Government indoctrination centers will do your children no favors. We are many years from local schools being good schools centered on the education of children. They are centered on getting more money and wasting it on frivolous ‘after school activities’ while allowing any sort of drivel to be peddled in the classroom.

This testing is just a symptom that is the disease of government run schools.
