Five hurt after three vehicle crash involving Interurban Trolley in Dunlap

(Ben Quiggle/Elkhart Truth)

Several people are recovering after a major crash Friday afternoon involving two cars and an Interurban Trolley.

The crash happened at about 4:20 p.m. Friday on U.S. 33 in the center turn lane to get onto C.R. 13. A car turned in front of the trolley, causing the driver of the trolley to swerve right to avoid the first car, but to end up hitting a second, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

The trolley ended up grazing a house and ended up narrowly missing a power pole, squeezing itself in between both.

Four riders of the trolley were hurt, along with the 23-year-old Goshen woman driving the first car. She had to be taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment of a serious head injury while the others were treated at Elkhart General Hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Just one southbend lane was open on U.S. 33 for about an hour until the center turn lane was opened for northbound traffic. The crash cleared up entirely at about 6 p.m.

The Goshen woman was also given a ticket for failing to yield the right of way.
