A 43-year-old Dowagiac man was rescued from the water when the fishing boat he was on capsized.

Emergency crews were called to Belas Lake in Cass County around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

The Dowagiac man and two other men from Niles were fishing when the vessel had capsized and took on too much water before sinking partially due to high waves and wind speed, the sheriff’s department reported.

The two Niles men jumped off the vessel when they realized they were about to capsize and swam to the shore to call for help, the sheriff’s department reported.

The Dowagiac man was picked up by emergency crews with another vessel and brought to shore.
