A 46-year-old Michigan City man is in critical condition after being shot by an off-duty Michigan City police officer.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, at Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City.

Two off-duty Michigan City police officers working security at the hospital were called to the parking lot by relatives about a family member who refused to leave his vehicle and seek medical assistance, according to Indiana State Police.

The uniformed officers made contact with the man, who was sitting on the passenger side of a pick-up truck, Indiana State Police said.

The man pulled a handgun from within the pickup and pointed the weapon at one of the officers standing by the driver’s door, Indiana State Police said.

Out of concern for their safety, the officer standing on the passenger side of the vehicle pulled his weapon and shot the man several times.

The man was flown to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment where he is in critical condition.

After the state police investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the LaPorte County Prosecutor for review.
