Old Marquette School on “Ten Most Endangered” buildings list

A former elementary school in South Bend has made the Indiana Landmarks “Ten Most Endagered” list.

The old Marquette School has sat vacant for nearly two years. It was built in 1936 and is still owned by the South Bend Community Schools Corporation, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Indiana Landmarks hopes that the building can experience some renewal. Supporters of doing something with the facility note that it still has a good structure and would be perfect for senior housing or a children’s activity center. The goal is to find a developer who can save the building from demolition.

SBCSC would still have to agree to any potential plans.

Laughable as usual! May 2, 2017 at 3:09 pm

Anyone remember South Bend school superintendent Virginia Calvin from the 90’s? She said this building was too dangerous to have people inside of it. Now “it still has a good structure and would be perfect for senior housing or a children’s activity center”. Interesting how lack of use makes a building into a safer and stronger structure.

Get busy! Perfect example of how to turn this in to senior housing and community theater exists in Mishawaka at Battell Center.

This is a no brainer!
