A traffic stop on Saturday led to a suspect being tased in LaPorte County.
Two officers made a traffic stop on U.S. 20 east of S.R. 39 near Springville for a speeding violation, and noticed a strong odor of marijuana and what appeared to be a large number of credit cards near the center console, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.
The 34 year-old male driver from Chicago remained at the vehicle while being handcuffed, but his passenger attempted to escape on foot. After he was caught, the passenger struggled to escape being cuffed and was tased.
The driver was later released, but the passenger was identified as Norman Smith of Chicago, who was wanted on multiple warrants and had a long criminal history, including credit card theft. Smith was also treated for a broken ankle sustained while running down an embankment to avoid capture.

The driver was released…though transporting a criminal with drugs and probably identity theft evidence due to the credit cards. How does this make any sense?
